How to Become a Medical Assistant While Working Full Time

You don't have to quit your job to start a healthcare career. Here's how a hybrid medical assistant program with evening and weekend labs fits around real life.

Maybe you're working full time, raising kids, or both. You know you want a more rewarding career in healthcare — but quitting your job to go back to school full time just isn't realistic. Here's the good news: it doesn't have to be.

With the right program and a little planning, you can train to become a medical assistant while keeping your current job. Here's how.

Choose a program built around your schedule

The biggest factor is the program format. Look for one that minimizes the time you need to be on campus and lets you do the rest on your own time. At Providence Medical Academy, our hybrid program is designed exactly for that.

Online coursework with 24/7 access

Textbook readings, assignments and quizzes are completed online across 12 weeks — with full instructor support. Study early in the morning, on your lunch break or after the kids are in bed. Whatever works for you.

Just four in-person skills labs

You'll come to campus only four times for hands-on skills training. Choose the lab schedule that fits your week:

Lab schedule options

  • Tuesday evenings: 5:30 – 9:30 pm
  • Saturday mornings: 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

A two-week externship at the end

The externship is required to graduate and takes place at the end of the program. This is the one part that needs some advance planning — talk with your employer early about time off or a schedule adjustment so you're ready when the time comes.

5 tips for balancing work and school

  1. Block out study time. Put study sessions on your calendar like appointments — consistency beats cramming.
  2. Use a computer, not your phone. Our program isn't designed to be completed on a smartphone, so make sure you have a reliable computer and internet connection.
  3. Plan your externship early. Give your employer plenty of notice.
  4. Lean on your support system. Let family and friends know your schedule so they can help.
  5. Ask for help when you need it. Full instructor support means you're never on your own.

"She has been on the waiting list at another school for months when we found this program. She was able to start immediately." — Celeste R., parent of a Providence student

Start sooner than you think

Classes at Providence start monthly, so you can begin your new career without waiting months for a spot. In just 18 weeks, you'll be eligible to sit for the NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam — and exam prep is included in your tuition.
