Everything you want to know about becoming a medical assistant and our accelerated program — from the job outlook to the externship.

What does a medical assistant do?

Medical assistants are responsible for administrative and clinical tasks in physician offices and outpatient ambulatory settings. They work alongside physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and other support staff to care for patients across the lifespan.

What is the job outlook for the medical assistant role?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 16 percent from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.¹ In Georgia, medical assisting is listed as number 10 of 20 occupations with the most job growth through 2028.² This positions the medical assistant role as one of high necessity and demand, with a stable career outlook.

What will I learn in the accelerated medical assisting program?

Our program is designed to give you the foundational knowledge and skills to successfully pass the NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. Through didactic instruction and skills lab training, you'll be prepared to enter the workforce as a skilled and confident healthcare worker, providing quality and safe patient care. The program focuses on medical office front- and back-office tasks and procedures that support patient care under the supervision of a licensed independent practitioner (physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant). Upon graduation, you'll be qualified to enter the workforce as a medical assistant.

How do I apply and what happens after I apply?

We strive for our application process to be quick and easy! The first step is to complete your application on the Apply page. If you meet the basic requirements for enrollment, we'll contact you to determine financing options. When financing is secured, you'll receive an email with your Student Handbook, Class Schedule and an Enrollment Agreement to sign electronically. Once signed, your enrollment is complete!

How can your program be so fast?

Traditional medical assisting programs can take anywhere from 10–14 months to complete. That may be the best pathway for students seeking credits toward future education — but at Providence Medical Academy, we believe in high-quality, hands-on education that prepares confident and competent medical assistants to enter the workforce in a faster timeframe. Whether you choose a traditional or accelerated program, the outcome is the same: you're eligible to sit for certification with the skills to start your career as a medical assistant.

Do you offer an externship?

Yes. An externship is required to graduate from the program and is completed at the end of the program.

Is certification required to become a medical assistant?

There is no requirement for medical assistants to become certified. However, an increasing number of employers are looking for certified medical assistants and often show them preference when hiring.

How much does the program cost, and is financing available?

Tuition is $4,950 when paid in full (a $1,000 savings). You can also apply for a student loan through Fortify, or use WIOA funding — we're an approved training program. See Financial Information for details.
